The New Year

After loosing my sweet cat “Buddy” over the holidays and getting a good old fashion cold during our week of freezing weather in Texas, the new year is off to an interesting start. For some reason, it really does feel new. We have a new year. That is really just swell.

Despite my sad farewell to my kitty and my illness, my back has been doing well this month, and I’m charging ahead with new ideas and energy. So today I just want to share neat things that have happened.

First, I’m driving down the street and see  some chickens in a yard about 5 blocks away. Now I live in the capital city of Texas, not some farm town. But we got some funky chicken people in Austin and these neighbors invited me in to meet their chickens and see their coop. I met the chickens by name, heard their stories, and even got to hold several of them. They are some cool birds. Such beautiful feathers and eyes! At the coop, there were two fresh eggs, one white and one green, which the neighbors gave to me. Now that was a fun stop!

Then at the grocery store, and I stop dead in my tracks behind a man about 6 feet tall who had hair down to the bottom of his calves. I had to nudge someone to make sure they saw it too. It was a sight to behold.

Tonight I watched the news, and a local horse stable had burned down (yes, right here in Austin… this is a city with chickens and horses). This stables was owned by the man who did the movie “The Horse Boy”. He opened the stables for his son and other autistic children to bond with horses. Here is the movie trailer; it brought me to tears when he asked, “How far would you go to help someone you loved?”

By the way, no horses were lost, but they will need to recoup financially to rebuild.

Then just now I get an email about a friend’s son who is now a teenager and playing in the most unusual band, so I listened to their songs for awhile. Young but highly creative:

So anyway, welcome to 2010. I’m thinking it could be a very good year.

PS… I forgot to mention the pot-bellied pig in the yard between my house and the chickens…
